Types of Online Poker Tournaments

Online poker tournaments are increasing in popularity these days. Most poker rooms offer grand prize pools and lucrative offers on the tournaments running on their sites. Here are some online poker tournaments played widely on online poker sites.

Multi-Table Tournaments

Players get entry into a multi-table online poker real money tournament with a fixed amount of ‘buy in’. Equal number of chips is distributed among players participating in the tournament. Every time a player gets eliminated, a seat becomes empty. The existing players of the tournament adjust their positions to make sure that each table has equal number of participants. Multi-table tournaments continue for hours and sometimes for days.

These tournaments reward only the top scoring players. To give an example, if a particular multi-table tournament rewards only the top 10 players, the 11th one doesn’t receive any money. A multi-table tournament can be divided into three periods-final, middle and early tables. As suggested by the name, ‘early’ refers to the beginning part of a tournament. The ‘middle’ period starts when most players are eliminated and only a few are left to play. The ‘final’ period is played by the remaining players. These are mostly players having excellent poker skills.

Sit and Go

Similar to other poker tournaments, Sit and Go also has a fixed buy in. A player has to first select a table and take a seat. The tournament begins once a table is full. Same number of chips is given to the participating players. A sit and go tournament continues until one player gets all the chips. Prizes vary, but most poker rooms reward the winner with cash worth 50% of the total prize fund.

Freeroll

Most of the prominent poker sites run freeroll tournaments. A freeroll is a tournament which can be participated in without an entry fee. However, some freerolls need players to pay a certain sum of money. Certain sites need a minimum number of points in the player’s account to take part in a freeroll tournament. But most sites that have freeroll tournaments allow players to participate for free. This means that participating in freerolls is a great way of adding to your bankroll.

Unlike other poker tournaments, the prize pool of a freeroll is not the sum of the entry fees paid by players. Rather, it is the house which donates for the prize pool. In addition, sponsorship fees also form parts of the prize pool amount.

Single elimination tournament

A single elimination tournament, also known as a knockout is one where the losing player of each match is eliminated immediately. The player doesn’t have a chance to win the first prize. But the player can still be a part of the tournament. The eliminated player can take part into classification contests which are held later.

The winning player moves on to the next round while the one who loses is knocked out. Some tournaments are purely based on single eliminations, while some consist of a few phases, the last one of which eliminates the loser. This final stage is known as a playoff.
