Bwin Party Digital owns the site. A month ago, there were rumors that Poker Room will be launched once again. According to reports, the idea of re-launching Poker Room was initiated by Bwin. It is a Stockholm based firm which partnered with PartyGaming last year.
Poker Room became a Big Hit after its Launch in 1999
Poker Room was first launched in the year 1999. After this, the site became extremely popular among poker enthusiasts. It was a big hit with players gambling on the Ongame Network. Poker Room had been one of the first few poker sites to offer games to players all over the world. It was licensed by the Kanhawake Gaming Commission. The poker room was one of the first few sites to have multi-language support services. It supported a host of European languages such as German, Spanish, French and Italian.
Ongame’s exit from the US market paved the way for the shut down of Poker Room. Ongame Network was forced to leave the US online poker market following the introduction of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which was passed in 2006. Poker Room lost its player traffic significantly after Ongame’s exit. The site suffered big losses and was finally shut down in 2009. At the time of its exit, Poker Room had transferred its player base to Bwin.
Bwin Re-opened Poker Room as Part of its Growth Strategy
The decision to re-launch Poker Room was taken by Bwin as a part of its growth strategy. Bwin.party Digital plans to enter the US market for online gambling. It partnered with Boyd Gaming and MGM for this reason. Now, with the launch of the Poker Room, Bwin aims at increasing its player-base in the US market.
Ongame Network is currently up for sale. This is another reason why Bwin decided to re-launch Poker Room. Bwin wanted to enhance its value by re-opening a brand which was quite well reputed in the online poker world. Poker Room’s home page comes with an opening note. It states that Poker Room is happy to announce that it is back in the online poker world. The gambling platform is open to players of all categories – high rollers, mid-rollers and low rollers. The site welcomes new poker players as well as those who have previously been its members.
